Whether your users can cancel an ongoing recurring subscription themselves depends mainly on the payment method that was used to pay for it. Not all payment providers support cancelling a recurring payment through their API, and CRE8 Members can only offer the cancellation where the provider does.
When does the "Cancel Subscription" button appear?
In the frontend dashboard, the Cancel Subscription button is shown for a subscription only if all of the following conditions are met:
- The plan is recurring. The plan's expiration type must be Recurring, Recurring + Trial 1 or Recurring + Trial 2. Fixed-term and lifetime plans can never be cancelled from the frontend.
- The order is running. The order must not be Confirmed (created but not yet paid), Cancelled or Expired, and the subscription itself must not be expired. Orders that are On Hold can still be cancelled.
- The payment app allows it. The payment app that paid the latest master invoice of the order must have Allow Recurring Billing Cancellation enabled.
- The user owns the order. Only the buyer of the order can cancel it.
Which payment apps support it?
You can check this in the configuration of each payment method app. If the provider supports cancelling recurring payments through its API, the app shows the Allow Recurring Billing Cancellation option. Otherwise the option is not available.
| Payment app | Allow Recurring Billing Cancellation |
|---|---|
| Stripe | Available, enabled by default |
| Authorize.net, Authorize.net CIM, Braintree, ePay, eWAY, Nets, Ogone, PayPal Pro, Payflow, PayU Turkey, Pin, QuickPay, Robokassa | Available (check the setting in each app) |
| Offline Payment | Available, disabled by default |
| PayPal (Standard), 2Checkout, PayFast, Stripe Checkout (hosted) and all other apps | Not available |
For example, the Stripe app supports recurring cancellations through its API and shows the Allow Recurring Billing Cancellation option:
Good to know
- The setting is checked whenever the dashboard is displayed. Enabling or disabling it applies immediately to existing subscriptions as well, not only to new ones.
- What counts is the payment app that paid the latest master invoice of the order. If a member changed the payment method, the setting of the new app applies.
Cancelling Recurring Subscription
Recurring subscriptions can be cancelled in the frontend by the user, or in the backend by an administrator.
Frontend
The user opens their dashboard and clicks Cancel Subscription on the subscription.
Backend
Administrators can cancel a recurring subscription from the subscription details in the backend.
